Stellar Energy Completes Modular Chiller Plant for Kansas State University

KSUStellar Energy, a global provider of energy plant solutions, has completed a modular chiller plant for Kansas State University's Veterinary Medicine Complex in Manhattan, Kansas.  Stellar Energy provided turnkey design, fabrication and installation of six (6) chiller modules for the Kansas State University Veterinary Medicine Complex, increasing chilled water capacity for all three of the buildings that comprise the complex.  The long-term, sustainable solution facilitates chilled water production and distribution to provide cooling capacity for the campus buildings, and is easily scalable if production demand increases.

The new system replaced a previous chiller plant without operational downtime since the modules were built at Stellar Energy's Jacksonville, Florida fabrication facility.  In addition to its expertise in modular chiller plant design and fabrication, Stellar Energy was selected for its in-house architectural resources. The plant features a limestone façade that is harmonious with the University's design. "We were able to provide a turnkey solution that did not disrupt campus operations and blended seamlessly with the existing architecture," said Kurt Peninger, General Manager & Senior Vice President, Stellar Energy Americas.

With more than 20 years experience, Stellar Energy has delivered more than 1 million tons of refrigeration (TRs) of chilled water plant solutions worldwide. The company's state-of-the-art water-cooled modular chiller plants are fabricated in its 46,000-square-foot facility in Jacksonville, Florida.  The chiller modules fabricated for the Kansas State University Veterinary Medicine Complex feature four Johnson Controls chillers, with space and provisions for a fifth chiller to be added at later date, a heat exchanger and variable speed pumps. In addition, the modular plant includes office space for site staff.

Modular construction

As opposed to traditional field-erected construction, modular construction involves the fabrication and assembly of systems and components in a quality-controlled fabrication facility. Once completed, the chiller plant is pre-packed, shipped and assembled on site. The factory build approach, free of the setbacks of inclement weather, offers several benefits, including a shortened construction schedule, improved safety, lower capital and operating costs, greater construction quality control and reduced project risk, to name a few.
